The deep-sea drilling vessel (D/V) Chikyu is the first riser-equipped scientific drilling vessel with the capability to drill up to 7,000 m into the Earth from the sea floor, and will be used to research and better understand the mechanisms of the Earth system. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is operating the Chikyu in the framework of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). As a member of this far-reaching international project, Nippon Marine Enterprises is providing site survey support for JAMSTEC.
Site survey here means seismic, ocean current, and seafloor surveys at the sites proposed for drilling by the Chikyu. To ensure the safety and efficiency of the deep-sea drilling work, Nippon Marine Enterprises is helping with the site surveys to identify factors that might pose drilling hazards. Our responsibilities include planning the site surveys, making all arrangements, and then supporting onboard work. |
