The deep-sea research vessel Kairei is a state-of-the-art vessel whose features include support for the 7,000-meter-class remotely operated vehicle Kaiko 7000Ⅱ, a multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection survey system, and a multi-narrow beam echo sounder.
The Kairei's achievements to date include the discovery of hydrothermal activities and ecosystems in the Indian Ocean and, with the help of the Kaiko, many deep-sea explorations in the Mariana Trench, the world's deepest.
Nippon Marine Enterprises was commissioned to operate and manage the Kairei in 2000.
